John Halbert - Celebrating  Sixty Years as an Elder

Where do I start to talk about John Halbert and his work for our church?

Well, first of all, to be an active elder and still full of enthusiasm and love for this church, after 60 years service, is a fantastic achievement.

I think we all know that John is the very essence, the very best example of what a good elder should be like -  always friendly and welcoming to everyone at the church, phoning and visiting people to keep them in touch with the church, encouraging others with praise and thanks.  Not only that, but he is unfailingly good-humoured, willing to take on every task he’s asked to do; volunteering, in fact, to do his share and more of the work of the Session.

Even before John was an elder he was active in the church, but in his 60 years as an elder he has had a variety of roles. He was one of the first officers of the 2nd Dreghorn BB company  in the 1960s, he has been the Sunday School Superintendent and also Session Clerk.  He has also been our Senior elder for many years and most recently, of course, chairman of the Nominations Committee. Add to this, his faithful attendance at Session meetings (too many to count!) and his valuable contribution to the decision-making of the Session, plus his work for various giving campaigns.

John has shown his Christian faith through everything he has done in so many practical ways.

He has dedicated his time and energy to our church and supported it whole-heartedly as an elder through 5 ministers and countless Session Clerks. On a personal note, he has been a wonderful support to me over the past 22 months since I became Session Clerk.

This congregation is really proud of John, and very, very grateful for all the work he has done over the last 60 years and, we hope, will go on doing for many years to come.

Thank you very much, John!
